Earlier I wrote the poem ‘De Zomer in mijn Hoofd’ (in Dutch) on Ástor Piazzolla’s master piece Adiós Nonino, which I recited in summer 2011 during a cultural event, called ‘Zomerkolder’, in Soest, The Netherlands. Now I have made an attempt to translate it into English, which comes with title ‘The Summer in My Head’.
The performance of ‘De Zomer in mijn Hoofd’ (Dutch version) can be seen on YouTube.
‘THE SUMMER IN MY HEAD’
[composition: Adiós Nonino, composer Ástor Piazzolla, text: © Frank de Zanger]
[music introduction]
Give me a summer / a long summer with joy
To recover / from the dreadful fuss
From the crises / from again a recession
From again a disaster / from again an attack
Arrogant bankers
With their grabbing hands
Politicians / with their beautiful stories
Companies / that keep on pumping for oil
—
Why are they doing this? / Yes, why are they doing this?
What counts at the end / is just a blue sky
A babbling brook / a bird in its flight
The smile of a child / somebody loving you
A head without many / many confusing thoughts
What I really want / is a long, long summer
In lengths, lengths, lengths / lengths of days
Then I will truly quit / can’t be affected anymore
Then I will truly quit / can’t be affected anymore
What counts at the end / is just a blue sky
A babbling brook / a bird in its flight
The smile of a child / leaf trembling in the wind
A head without many / many confusing thoughts
—
Of foolishness, of gluttony, of cruelty
I cannot sleep anymore
I want the summer in my head / in my head
Head, head, head, head, head
Let us change it now / let us change it, let us change it
Forget the greedy bankers / forget the intrigues
Forget the fight / that only provides oil
I want real freedom / I want the summer
—
Let us change it now / let us change it, let us change it
—
Let us change it now / let us change it, let us change it
I see real freedom / I see the summer

Alternatives / have only little chance
Silly television / is what we see all day
We invite the disasters / disasters into our own home
What a foolishness / do we hold in our hands
—
What I really want / is a long, long summer
In lengths, lengths, lengths / lengths of days
Then I will truly quit / can’t be affected anymore
Then I will truly quit / can’t be affected anymore
And for how long can / we hold the summer?
When strikes madness / strikes madness again?
Opportunism / nosiness and routine
Sizzling folly / great messing up
—
We just walk out / just walk out, just walk out
You and me, we and them / choose alternatives
I want real freedom / I want the summer
I really want it all
Let us change it now / let us change it, let us change it

[…] The poem does not start straight away with the start of Adiós Nonino. The first few verses of the music are used as an introduction. It is quite easy to find out where the text of the poem starts, because it starts where one would naturally start any text. See also the post on 12 February and 14 October 2012. […]
